Amadeus & Joachim zijn een bedrijf begonnen die GRATIS een nieuw computer-besturings-systeem aanbiedt. Zij verdienen hun brood aan de service, die daarvoor wordt gevraagd.

Het nieuwe besturingsysteem heet HOLOS en is een zeer stabiel platform, waarbij het bedienen van een computer veel eenvoudiger wordt. Dat is vooral een voordeel voor mensen die wat ouder zijn (zoals wij!) of wat minder computer-savvy, zoals dat heet.

Amadeus & Joachim have begun a new company that provides a new computer operating system for FREE. They earn a living by providing the services for it.

The new operating system is called HOLOS and it appears to be very stable. It makes working at your computer much simpler, which is an advantage for more senior users (to whom we count ourselves). Also for people who are less computer savvy, HOLOS is the answer.

Zaterdagavond, 7uur. Overdag is het bloedheet, zo'n 36 graden en broeierig heet. Er zit regen in de lucht. Net als de mensen onderweg zijn naar de 'terugkomavond' op hun brommertjes, en enkelen in hun auto, begint de regen te stromen. Geen geweldige timing, maar blijkbaar noodzakelijk voor zo'n natuurlijk fenomeen.

Saturday night, 7 PM. Terribly hot weather in the daytime, approximately 36°C and very sticky. Rain seems to be approaching. Just when several people have begun their trip on their motorcycles to the renewal night, and only some of them in their cars, the rain begins to pour. Not the best timing, but seemingly necessary for such a natural phenomenon.

Als de avond begint zijn er ongeveer 20 stellen aangekomen, om de 'Renewal meeting' mee te maken. De sfeer zit er al vroeg in. We zingen enthousiast een aantal Thaise liefdesliedjes. De stellen die achter de schermen hebben gewerkt in het Weekend vertellen hun verhalen. Hoe blij ze zijn dat ze dit hebben meegemaakt, om anderen een fantastisch weekend te bezorgen.

As soon as the evening begins there are about 20 couples to live the renewal meeting with us. There is a good atmosphere in the room. We sing a couple of Thai love songs with great enthusiasm. The Support Team, or couples who have worked behind the scenes on the weekend, begin to tell their stories. How happy they were they could work behind the scenes and provide a fantastic weekend for the others.

Tijdens hun verhaal valt de stroom uit in de hele stad, waarschijnlijk als gevolg van noodweer in de provincie. (Udon is een stad met ongeveer 1.5 miljoen inwoners).

During their story telling there is a blackout in the entire city, probably as a result of bad weather somewhere else in the province [Udon is a city with approximately 1.5 million inhabitants].

We zitten met z'n allen lekker te zweten in het donker, terwijl het programma door moet gaan. De airconditioning, de beamer en alle lichten zijn weggevallen. We behelpen ons met het spaarzame licht van mobiele telefoons.

Here we are with all of us perspiring in a dark room while the program has to go on. The air conditioning, the LCD projector and all the lights blacked out. We try to survive in this room with the scarce light of mobile telephones.

En toch........dit heeft ook z'n charme. Terwijl we daar zo in het donker bijeen zijn vertellen twee echtparen van de overwinningen in hun huwelijk, tijdens en na het weekend. Een van de 2 paren vertelt dat ze al 8 jaar zijn getrouwd. Hun namen zijn B & B. Hij is enig kind uit een Chinese familie, die altijd zijn zin heeft gekregen en in het huwelijk voor zijn vrouw zich ook vaak als zodanig heeft gedragen.

But still..... this also has its own charm. While we are there together in this dark room two couples are telling us how they have overcome many things in their marriage during and after the weekend. One of them relates that they have been married for eight years now. Their names are B and B. He is the only child born to a Chinese family, who has always received everything he needed and who in his marriage to his wife as often behaved the same way.

Hij heeft haar nooit complimenten gegeven, want het was zijn gewoonte om altijd iets negatiefs te vinden, als 'compliment'. In het ALMA Weekend heeft hij leren zien dat hij zich altijd gedroeg als een alleenstaande, die getrouwd was. In het ALMA Weekend heeft hij geleerd om zijn zachte kant aan zijn vrouw te tonen en haar (eigenlijk voor het eerst) het hof te maken.

He has never given her any compliments, since it was his habit to always find something negative as a 'sort of a compliment.' In the Alma weekend he has begun to see himself, in the way he used to behave, like a married single. During the Alma weekend he has learned to show his soft side to his wife and actually to woo her for the first time in his life.

B. zegt zelf 180 graden te zijn gedraaid en heeft ontdekt hoe veel hij echt om haar geeft. Hij zegt in heel zijn leven nog in geen enkel ding succes te hebben gevonden, maar wil nu alles doen om zijn relatie met zijn vrouw te ontwikkelen en er echt iets van te maken. Onder tranen vertelt zij hoe haar man in 48 uur een ander mens is geworden. God heeft wonderen gedaan in de levens van vele stellen. Dit werk levert vruchten op waar we soms alleen maar van dromen.

Na het lied 'It only takes a spark to get a fire going', is de avond voorbij. In de lobby van het hotel flitsen opeens alle lichten weer aan. Opgelucht gaat iedereen zijns weegs. We kunnen slapen met de airconditioning weer aan. Het is een prachtavond geweest.

After singing the song 'It only takes a spark to get a fire going' the evening is past. In the lobby of the hotel the lights come on again and everybody is happy before going home. Now we can sleep with the air conditioning on again! This night has been fabulous.

Sonnet 116Love that “bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (I Corinthians 13:7) does not come from within. It can only come from God.

A couple of years ago, we celebrated our 25th Anniversary. Andre stood at the front of the church, handsome in his suit and tie. Again, I walked down the aisle, not in a long white gown, but in a lovely, royal blue dress, fit for the occasion. We were renewing our vows to love, honor and cherish each other but this time it was harder. Andre and I met at a mission’s convention in April and were married in July. We were both thirty-one years old and understood that marriage was 99% commitment and the rest would fall into place.

Needless to say, we did not really know each other. Our backgrounds were similar: we were both raised in large Catholic families; both of us had lived in several locations growing up; we both graduated from the same bible college and had a calling to missions.Soon after we got married, we moved to Thailand to start our missionary life together. We studied language for a year and then I got pregnant. We had our struggles as any newlyweds: finances, communication, boundaries. And we learned.

But after several years of marriage, we felt like we needed counseling. We did not seem to be communicating well and I was getting depressed. But we were committed to each other and to the Lord. We lived from one counseling session to the next, Andre oblivious to the problem, but knowing that I was unhappy.We continued that way for over 20 years, when I went back to school to get a degree in Human Development for my teacher certification.

In one of my classes, one of students gave a report on Asperger’s Syndrome. Some of the indicators that she mentioned were that the person felt uncomfortable in a crowd, was focused and knowledgeable on a few topics, was unable to express feelings, was unable to empathize, and had a strong sense of right and wrong (a black or white mentality).I thought, “That sounds like Andre.”

The diagnosis was confirmed the following summer. Now we had something to work with, a reason for our misunderstandings. Now I did not blame Andre, but I did grieve over the things that I would not have with my husband and the things that I would have to learn to deal with. It is not always easy.

In fact, sometimes I find myself singing a song that was popular when I was a teenager. The lyrics go like this:I don’t like you, but I love you,Seems that I’m always thinking of youYou really gotta hold on me.It is our Father who has a hold on us. He brought us together for a reason.

The things that I saw in Andre before we got married – his love for the Lord, his faithfulness, his tenacity are what I focus on when I get discouraged. With God’s help, we are learning to listen to each other. Andre realizes that he is atypical. He now tells me that I could have married someone better than he.

The truth is, through all the ups and downs, the good and the bad, God brought us together and He is working in both of our lives for His glory. I love the man who cheered me on as I got my teaching certification and my Master’s Degree. And he loves the woman who stands beside him and supports him in his church planting efforts. We have both accomplished more married to each other than we could have otherwise.

A marriage made in heaven? Probably, but God lets us work out the details on earth. Zelden hebben we het zo lekker in Bangkok, vannacht wordt het waarschijnlijk zelfs 19 graden. Gewoon koud voor ons begrip. Maar wel genieten, vooral als je bedenkt dat deze stad meestal 32-35 graden telt en zeer vochtig! Dus vanavond kruipen we eens lekker onder de wol, geen airco nodig, de ramen wijd open.

Verjaardag van Koning Bhumibol

Vandaag is de verjaardag van de Thaise koning. Wij bidden hem vrede toe en dat hij rechtvaardig mag regeren over zijn volk. We hopen dat hij nog lang zal leven en tot een voorbeeld zal zijn voor velen.

Inmiddels is de nieuwste BB de deur uit, op weg naar vele e-mail brievenbussen. Deze keer niet meer de traditionele PDF brief maar en snellere verbinding rechtstreeks naar de website. We hopen dat het onze lezers zal bevallen.

Dick gaat morgen op weg naar Nederland, om zijn moeder te begraven. Zij heeft een bewogen leven achter de rug met haar 94 jaar levenservaring. Dick hoopt na 14 dagen weer terug te keren naar Thailand. Graag jullie gebed voor hem en voor Johanna die alleen achterblijft om de zaken te blijven behartigen.

Nieuwe Nacht op Een

Opnieuw een aflevering van de Nacht op Een, waar een vraaggesprekje met Dick te beluisteren valt, maar ook met Nella Davidse, die in Pattaya werkt. Helaas zit dat helemaal aan het einde van de geluidsfile en ik weet nog niet hoe ik dat eruit kan knippen.

'Kleinkind' Johanna erbij....

Prachtig kindje, zojuist geboren uit Laotiaanse ouders. We gingen bij hen op kraambezoek, zo'n 650 km naar het Noord-Oosten. Ze hebben hun kindje naar Johanna vernoemd, wat betekent "God is genadig'! Naast twee zonen hebben Wilat & Kiaw nu dus een dochter. De dokters hadden gezegd dat zij heel weinig kans hadden op nog een kindje, in verband met de hormoonspiegels van de moeder. Maar wat bleek, na het ALMA Weekend van Augustus werd ze toch weer zwanger. Dit is hun hekkensluiter, want de moeder is nu gesteriliseerd. Wilat & Kiaw geloven nog maar 4 jaar C., (hij kwam tot geloof tijdens een weekend van 2007), maar zijn vanaf die tijd bijzonder betrokken geweest bij het ALMA werk achter de schermen. We wensen hen een spoedig herstel toe.

Vergeving...Mooi!!

Zojuist een bijzonder mooie sessie achter de rug met een jong stel, die toevallig geen C.zijn. Wij hebben hen vergeving naar elkaar laten uitspreken voor dingen die zij elkaar hadden aangedaan in het recente verleden. Wow....wat een oefening, maar ook geweldig mooi! Om te zien hoe integer deze jonge lui met elkaar willen omgaan en hoe zuiver ze willen staan in het leven. Voorbeelden zijn ze! We laten hen met een dankbaar gevoel de wereld weer intrekken.
